After several years I've reread this with a different view, I'm thinking it's maturity, a broadened exposure to other war conflicts. As for this era of reads/stories it is not my 'go to' read. I totally disagree with the book cover…

A mediocre and dull book that was made into a terrible movie. I have no idea how this won the National Book Award (1997) and received praise from Alfred Kazin, Kaye Gibbons, and Rick Bass. I also have no idea how you write a novel about…

A masterpiece of words. There were unexpected twists and turns throughout the story and I was shocked about what happens to one of the main characters. This book could stand the test of time and still be a jewel among other literary works.

Good novel overall. It is a good book but it is more for teens+. If you want a book about adventure and surviving, this is a good one.

One of my all time favorite reads. A simplistic love story complicated by a grim and devastating war. The haunting prose and vivid imagery require readers to have a passionate patience to see the story to the end.

During the Civil War, a soldier deserts the front, hoping to find his way back through Cold Mountain to his love. Their reunion turns out to be very bitter sweet. One of the best works of fiction I’ve read in a long time.

It's violent, gory, beautiful - the language of this book is educational, deeply moving IMO. The only Civil War book I have ever liked. 4-4-18 One of the most often seen films & audiobooks I've ever enjoyed. It just never gets old for…

Great novel. It wasn't until after the introduction of Ruby's character that I enjoyed picking up the book. I found Ada's character to be irritating, that is until midway through her story. I was pleasantly surprised by this novel, and…

@bdetty - I also hated this book. Couldn't stand it actually and somehow ended up with two copies. You're not alone!

I recognize that this book is "literature" and well written in many regards, but I hated it. I'll admit, I feel like not liking this book makes me seem like a "dumb" reader, since pretty much all "serious readers" love this book... but I…

This was about as good a piece of fiction as I had ever read until I got to the last few chapters. It's as if Frazier ran out of steam. Worth the National Book Award for the remainder of the book.

Loved this book. Enjoyed watching Ada become self sufficient running a farm on her own with none of the modern conveniences.
