As the title states, this is a book about 'toxic parents' and their continuing influence on their now adult children. While many will recognize bits and pieces of their own childhood in this New York times best seller it offers other insights as well. Having read this book, one may wonder if they might be a toxic parent, toxic grandparent or toxic coworker etc. It may give pause for us all to self examine our many roles and relationships for their potential 'toxicity'. While I generally don't read self help books, this one copyrighted in 1989 seems to stand as relevant today as when first written. The fact that I read the whole book and found it interesting earned it a 4 1/2 star rating.

The stories in this book are shocking, heart-breaking… I am glad there is a book like this.

If you grew up in an environment where at least one parent was less than supportive, and love was conditional, I highly recommend this book. Despite a fair amount of prior self-directed research and reading, this book took my understanding to the next level, and was cathartic in many ways.

The author recommends reading all sections, even those that don't seem applicable. I'm glad I did because while I did not suffer physical or sexual abuse, some of the underlying behaviors and reactions discussed in those sections cut across categories and created "aha" moments for me.
