The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey. This is the second book in the Mysterious Benedict Society series. If you haven't read the first book, then you should read it now since this review will contain many spoilers. The second book doesn't come as a disappointment. If we look at Google Books rating, then we can see that 99% of all people who read it liked it. The author Trenton Lee Stewart really did a good job on that one! The book was written and published in 2008. But let's get to the plot of the book. The storyline happens approximately 1 year later after the events of the first book. Reynie Muldoon, the main character hurries to see his friends Sticky, Kate and a 3 year old Constance Contraire. They reunite with Mr Benedict and each other after a long time. Mr Benedict even prepared a scavenger hunt for them to just remember the good old times. Unfortunately for the kids, and quite obviously for us, the readers, all the fun had to be delayed because somebody (ahem, Mr Curtain) decided that it would be the best idea in the world to kidnap their own twin brother. That is how Mr Benedict and his assistant Number Two got kidnapped. The kids know who is behind it all. Side note: Mr Benedict probably knew he would be kidnapped by his own brother, so he made a route of the Scavenger Hunt the route for... Mr Curtain's place to stay in? At any rate, the kids find the first clue and decide to follow the ship that would leave to Portugal from the port near their house.I can't even imagine what would happen if they misunderstood at least one clue like this one and just ruin everything for themselves. Like imagine, you and your friends decided to follow the clue from a kidnapped man, not knowing for sure if it was actually him who wrote it, and after reading it you decide that it talks about you going on a ship that departs in 30 minutes to Portugal, a country you have never been to, and illegally, since the kids don't have their documents! I am not saying the book is bad, it is just... unrealistic. Those questions didn't prevent me from enjoying the book and actually being so into it. There are some pretty good questions and riddles in it and it was fun solving them. In fact, there is another whole book by Trenton Lee Stewart just for riddles called "The Mysterious Benedict Society: Mr. Benedict's Book of Perplexing Puzzles, Elusive Enigmas, and Curious Conundrums". 5/5 Stars. @readermariacom of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

In this spellbinding sequel, Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Constance must rescue dear Mr. Benedict and Number Two from the clutches of the evil Mr. Curtain. Delightful characters and a fascinating plot mingle to create the best of all aromas—a good book. 5/5 stars, definitely.

Another good kid read, full of adventure, mischief and danger. Interesting development in Constance's new ability to recognize seemingly impossible patterns to know what's going on in the world around her (ie accurately predicting the weather).
Would recommend to any grade-school child

I loved this book, and the whole series in general. (It's my favorite series!) Seriously, if you haven't read them yet, you have to, soon. They are so good, so humorous, so adventurous, and such good reads.

i've read all of them three times by now, and they're so good, but i SO want to get the puzzle book!

angiem99 Jul 22, 2013

I absolutely adored the first book, so here I am finished the second. I'm not sure if I enjoyed it as much as the first but it was really good and there were lots of different puzzles and I think, boy, Trenton Lee must of been one smarty to be able to come up with stuff like this. I recommend this series, it's definitely very entertaining

The night was black, the owl did call.
I stood upon the silo tall,
Never suspecting I would fall…
Thanks to the boy who bumped me.

Though frightened, I had stayed alert.
No thoughtless slumbering did divert
Me from my task, till I got hurt…
Thanks to the boy who bumped me.

"And I realize there's no shortage of wickedness in this world, but is it not heartening to know that so many are willing to fight for the good? Think of that young librarian, Sophie, who made certain you escaped. Think of S.Q., who risked my brother's wrath to make me more comfortable. Think of Captain Noland, and Joe Shooter, and all the others—even strangers—who were prepared to sacrifice their safety, perhaps even their lives, on our behalf. That's something, is it not?" - Nicholas Benedict

..."If you promise to do that, I'll promise to obey you."
"No matter what?" Milligan said doubtfully.
"No matter what," the children said together.
Milligan studied their faces. "What if I tell you to stop whatever you're doing, drop to the ground, and pretend to be pigs?"
"Then we root around for grubs," Reynie said.
"We grunt and smell bad," said Constance.
"Do you mean feral pigs or domesticated pigs?" Sticky asked. "Because, you know their behavior patterns are considerably..." He trailed off. Milligan was staring hard at him. Sticky cleared his throat. "Not that I would ask that question THEN. I'd be too busy snuffling and oinking."

Navy_Dolphin_51 Aug 03, 2013

If the children had given Milligan a headache before, what he was experiencing now was something like the flu combined with a toothache, with lockjaw and mumps thrown in for good measure. In other words, Milligan was suffering.
