"Opening night" (1977), written and directed by John Cassavetes, is a strange and emotional film that will make an impact on you. This story shows a human being during a period of deep emotional turmoil, and professional confusion.

If you liked " Birdman " watch this film, which may have inspired it- and in my opinion is the superior film.
Juggling onstage and offstage action, John Cassavetes makes this a fascinating look at some of the internal mechanisms and conflicts that create theatrical fiction.
Brilliant, beautiful and harrowing. A must see for anyone who loves Cassavetes and Rowlands.

Echoes of Bergman can be felt in writer/director John Cassavetes’ powerful booze ’n cigarettes drama about loneliness, grief, and aging gracelessly. Certainly his love of both stage and cinema is clearly on display with a clever play-within-a-film approach while his use of unflattering lighting and looming close-ups strips the movie of any false sentimentality—little wonder that garish mirrors figure prominently. Gutsy and filmed with the immediacy of an improvised documentary, this certainly ranks as one of Rowlands’ and real-life hubby Cassavetes’ best collaborations.

Superb film! So very real and life-like....beautifully directed by John Cassavetes and perfect acting by Gena Rowlands. Love the style of this film ( camerawork, angles, shots, scene times )
