I ranked this CD as #35 on my bibliocommons list ("Popular" Music 2001 to 2017 (#2)). It is one of the many alternative/indie/rock albums that are popular in this decade. It is their second album, generally considered their best, but some critics/users prefer the debut album, "For Emma, Forever Ago". The rather soft, partially synthesized vocal lead takes some getting used to. 8.5/10
This record is equally great whether you want to really focus on the music or just play something that creates a beautiful background for whatever task you've got to complete (I played it whenever I really needed to bust out a paper in grad school). It's mellow without being boring, energetic without being over-the-top, and full of a lush, dreamy romanticism.
One of the most interesting new indie-rock albums I've listened to in a long time. Bon Iver is nominated for a bunch of Grammy awards too (sort of like Arcade Fire were last year) and deserve their accolades. The song "Calgary" is extremely moving in particular. Some of the songs take a couple spins to get into but once you give it a chance you'll be hooked by his beautiful voice.
Justin Vernon is amazing. This album is amazing. Great follow up to "For Emma, Forever Ago" and "Blood Bank". Favourite album of this year!
