An African Love Story is the incredible memoir of the author's life. It tells two stories. The first is the Tsavo years, and the extraordinary love story which blossomed when the young Daphne, moved to Tsavo with her first husband and fell head over heels with both the park and its famous warden, David Sheldrick. The second is the love story of how Daphne and David, who devoted their lives to saving elephant orphans, at first losing every infant under the age of two until Daphne at last managed to devise the first-ever milk formula which would keep them alive.

Following DSWT on Instagram had me interested in reading how Daphne Sheldrick committed most of her life to saving wildlife in Africa. I am more enamoured with elephants due to her experiences. I hope one day I can visit her sanctuary and I am definitely adopting an orphan. Some very brutal descriptions of elephant treatment and suffering. But it's necessary for readers to know why it is so important to save these sentient creatures. Daphne describes the political hurdles, the faulty scientists and the serendipitous understanding of the elephant matriarch. It's not just an African love story in the romantic sense. It's her love for wildlife. Sometimes it reads like a children's book in the way she names the animals and birds and their interaction with each other. I highly recommend this book and hope it influences readers to become active in saving all creatures in the wild.

A beautiful account of growing up, falling in love and most of all caring for wild animals. A great read. No question I had tears in my eyes reading some of the accounts of the brutal slaying of elephants, and rhinos. So sad that this practice continues to this day. I learnt a lot more about the intelligence of elephants and made a pact to myself to one day go to this sanctuary to help some elephants and other wild animals.
