In this "superb" thriller, Detective Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to the unsolved killing of a young female photographer during the 1992 L.A. riots ( Wall Street Journal ).
In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved.

Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box," the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

Riveting and relentlessly paced, The Black Box leads Harry Bosch, "one of the greats of crime fiction" ( New York Daily News ), into one of his most fraught and perilous cases.

One of my favourite series!! Bosch is off on a solo, secret adventure once again!!

As I recall, author Michael Connelly has used elements of previous Harry Bosch novels: the L.A. riots of 1992, the internal politics of the LAPD, the police chief as politician rather than law enforcement officer, and the involvement of the PSB (Professional Standards Bureau). He recycles elements, puts a new twist on it, and produces a new novel. Quite clever.

I would rate "The Black Box" at 4.0 stars.

I always like Michael Connelly and this one is no exception. However it is definitely "R" for language and gore.

Have read many of his Harry Bosch books. Definitely think the character is getting "old" - to be expected after so many years.Contrast Harry to the Mickey Haller series. There is a clear "freshness" to Mickey Haller. You read the books differently as well. With Harry B, it's "Come on. Hurry up." With Mickey Haller, it's "Looking forward to what's coming next."

Harry has developed an arrogance that has become rather offputting. His treatment of his partner, David Chu, as his personal gopher; his sanctimonious disdain for his lieutenant and chief, and how others drop everything to help him out...

Definitely recommend older Harry B books. Not this one

Well written suspenseful murder-mystery. I would say that this is one of Michael Connelly's best. Definately worth a read.
