5th book in the Isabel Dalhousie series.
I find myself rereading McCall's sentences because he's so smart. This plot does unwind rather slowly, which is okay. I continue to enjoy the Brother Fox behaviors, baby Charlie, and the seasonal qualities of Edinburgh. I agree with the other comments; Isabel's fear of being abandoned by her younger partner Jamie does get tiresome. But....then. That's real. McCall is a real writer of people who definitely feel real. Cat. Eddie. Grace. Isabel. Brother Fox.

I actually finished this book on a Saturday, albeit, not muddy. It was a welcome return to the streets of Edinburgh, Isabel's family, and the antics of Brother Fox.

Isabel is getting a bit tedious with her eternal security about her age and that of her younger partner. A plot is mainly framework for Isabel's philosophical musings which Smith seems to relish as I do. His books are reflective, quiet, kind descriptions of Edinburgh's 'intellectual' circle. Smith writes marvellous comfort books for the low-key crowd.

I've been a big Isabel Dalhousie fan, but isn't it time for her to get over her "I'm the older woman" insecurities? This most recent in the series--in which Isabel confronts a doctor accused of misconduct-- seems more labored than in the past, unlike the Patience Ramotswe books, which seem as fresh as ever Isabel, it's time to get on with life!

Nothing special but I liked this story even though it was a little flat in it's plot. Just an average outing for Isabel Dalhousie, an average writing by Mr Smith.
