Simply put this is as good as it gets for murder/mystery drama. Not sure about any panning below. Must be the air in the windy city or something!!!! I agree with the comment about True Detective season two (with Colin Farrell and Rachel MacAdams) this one pales in comparison. True Detective season one scores 9.1 on IMDb and is well deserved. Great theme song from the Handsomes ("From the dusty May sun, her looming shadow grows...")

True Detective Season 1 is a marvel of craftsmanship, storytelling and performances. This is becoming a rarity these days.

pathological grief, spewing sophomoric nihilism

Great series to binge. Based on horrific true events. Very well done. DO NOT WATCH SEASON TWO. SO BAD...(different story, different actors, does not compare to season 1)

Wow, Matthew McConnaghey gave an amazing performance. The story is dark and engrossing. More of a story of 2 flawed men and their evolving friendship.

One word.... PERFECTION!!

A genuine noire thriller/mystery. 1990's Louisiana Backdrop is eerily familiar to those of us who grew up in the Midwest during that time period.

October seems like the perfect time for a first or repeat (it's that good) viewing of the first season of this very dark series. General consensus points to skipping the second season altogether. The first features strong writing and the best performances I've seen from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. It's from HBO so you should expect the typical profanity, sex and drug use, plus violence and intense scenes since it is focused on a murder investigation.

Two homicide detectives investigate the ritualistic murder of a woman and are dragged into the underworld of prostitution, child kidnappings, and religious fanaticism. McConaughey and Harrelson make a dynamic pair and the story keeps pulling you in deeper each episode.

Maggie: In a former life, I used to exhaust myself navigating crude men who thought they were clever, so ask your questions or I’m leaving.
Cop: That’s a cop’s wife all right.
Maggie: Not anymore.
Rust: Everybody judges, all the time. Now, you got a problem with that, you’re living wrong.
Rust: People out here, it's like they don't even know the outside world exists, might as well be living on the xxyyzz moon.
Martin: There's all kind of ghettos in the world.
Rust: It's all one ghetto, man, a giant gutter in outer space.
