Good in parts but overall it doesn't quite make it, and certainly doesn't do justice to Greene's novel, as tends to be the case with film adaptations of books you know well. For me, everything hinges around Pinkie's performance and Sam Riley doesn't capture the mindless, souless chill of Greene's creation. In addition, the direction is rather disjointed and the there's little rhythm to the drama, just one thing after another. Star, by far, is Andrea Riseborough playing Pinkie's girlfriend Rose. If anything, she finds more in the character than Greene puts in there, at the same time avoiding a temptation to overplay. It's an intriguing performance and I expect to hear much more from her in future.
It's far from a bad film and people unfamiliar with the story will probably get more out of it than I did. A 1947 version featuring David Attenborough is rated highly, higher than this one by most critics.

Adaptation of a Graham Greene novel (which I now need to read). The novel is set in the 1930s, this DVD is set in 1964 in Brighton, England and has mods / rockers for character setting - Brighton was apparently an area subject to youth violence. Story covers a young guy (Pinkie) who gets involved in local organized crime and you watch him develop into a psychotic, violent, disturbingly ambitious criminal (another reason for me to read the book to see how the author describes/develops his character.) He meets (and uses) a young, religious, waitress to achieve his own means. She comes across quite naive and thinks she falls in love with Pinkie and is willing to do just about anything for him. Helen Mirren (always great) plays the young woman's boss and she is intent on looking after her or looking out for her. The 1960s setting is great with the kids riding around on scooters and the mods dressed in fancy suits and the rockers wearing leather, they listened to different types of music (see Wikipedia) and, of course, no one is wearing any kind of helmet! Bottom line a story of good v. evil / users v. abusers - and who is really winning the game at the end of the day? Now I need to read the book!

Thank you Voisjo for interesting perspective on this movie. It was too violent for me.

This 2010 UK film, based on a Graham Greene novel, is actually a remake of a 1947 film that starred the late Richard Attenborough as a youthful mob thug Pinkie. It is an incredibly intense story of a young man, either pathological by his genes or by parental abuse. We never really know, but this Pinkie is one of the most heartless individuals I have ever seen in a realistic/naturalistic film. If you want to see a great portrait of a cruel and dangerous manipulator, see this film. I liked it a lot more than most of the critics. If you wish to keep your dream that everybody has some goodness in his soul, then skip this film. Believe me, Pinkie is utterly without a conscience.

Fast moving, scary and enthralling

A perverse love story of an ambitious daring young thug who tried to silence a waitress as a potential witness to a murder. The setting was 1960's (instead of 1930's when the book was published) during a summer of youthful riot in Brighton, a seaside resort on the southern coast of England.

The film was based on a novel of the same name by British novelist Graham Greene. Acting was decent over all and the scenery around Brighton was interesting to look at. One problem is you don't care enough about characters in the film, and that makes watching it less enjoyable. Worth a look if you have a craving for British cinema.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

Imaginative and stylish film noir. The acting is great and the story is complex. If you're looking for a typical Hollywood shoot-em-up then this isn't the movie for you, but if you want something unique, then I highly recommend watching Brighton Rock.
