Don Rumata is one of a group of Earth scientists who have been sent to the planet Arkanar with the proviso that they must not interfere in the planet's political or historical development. Treated by the planet's natives as a kind of divinity, Don is both godlike and impotent in the face of its chaos and brutality.

Much ado about nothing, or, sound and fury.

Plenty of pointless doings in a dank, dreary planet.

What critics see in this film, eludes me.

Ultimately disappointing- it felt like I was watching a Tarkovsky film without any of the meaning- and a lot of spitting. I'd still like to read the book though.

This movie is based on the book of the same title from 1964. The new updated English book version sounds like it makes more sense. This movie is around 2 hours and 50 minutes. The idea and plot kept me captivated all the way through. Not your typical Sci-Fi Fantasy film. It's shot in B/W. Be forewarned, this movie is extremely graphic, most would called it sick&gross. Don Rumata is sent from Earth to planet Arkanar during their "Middle Ages". Don plays Jazz on some funky reed instrument, how cool is that?

When people talk great Russian cinema, all I hear is "Tarkovsky! Eisenstein! Tarkovsky! Eisenstein!" But "Hard to Be a God" confirms Alexei Yu. German's place up there with the greatest Russian filmmakers. The story is touching, the acting is flawless, the cinematography exquisite, the direction sublime, and the film as a whole instantly recognizable as possessing of a mesmerizing timeless character and an instant classic. Don't let this one pass you by.

(This film is currently listed as being 83 minutes long, but the actual length is about 3 hours, so be prepared.)
