Brought to Kenya as a small child and then abandoned by her mother, Beryl is raised both by her father--a racehorse trainer--and the native Kipsigis tribe on her father's land. Her unconventional upbringing transforms her into a daring young woman, with a love of all things wild, but everything she knows and trusts dissolves when her father's farm goes bankrupt. Reeling from the scandal and heartbreak, Beryl is catapulted into a disastrous marriage at the age of 16. Finally she makes the courageous decision to break free, forging her own path as a horse trainer and shocking high society in the process. The British colony has never seen a woman as determined and fiery as Beryl. Before long, she catches the eye of the fascinating and bohemian Happy Valley set, including writer Karen Blixen and her lover Denys Finch Hatton, who will later be immortalized in Blixen's memoir, Out of Africa. The three become embroiled in a complex triangle that changes the course of Beryl's life, setting tragedy in motion while awakening her to her truest self and her fate: to fly.

This well written historical novel takes place in Kenya in the early 20th century and is based on the life of Beryl Markham, a horse-trainer and early aviator. Her courage and determination to work and love to the limits of her ability make this a fascinating and inspiring read.

I could not really get into this novel. I don't know if it was the narrator or what. The character wasn't really engaging to me. I really enjoyed The Paris Wife, but this one I didn't like as much.

I really enjoyed this book! Beautifully written. I could envision Kenya in the 1920's and 1930's....

The counterpoint to Out Of Africa, Circling the Sun tells the remarkable story of Beryl Markham, horse trainer, aviatrix, adventuress and lover of many men, including the great African adventurer Dennis Finch Hatton. As in The Paris Wife, Paula McLain perfectly captures a sense of time and place, in this case, the nineteen twenties and thirties in Kenya, with lyrical prose and breathtakingly beautiful description. Katharine McEwan, the narrator, read the story with the perfect accent and languid pace to engage the listener. I found this the perfect format with which to enjoy this book.

Circling the Sun is the fictionalized biography of Beryl Markham from age 5 to 36. During these years, she is abandoned by her mother, raises herself on the Kenya frontier, has two disastrous marriages, becomes a horse trainer, and flies solo across the Atlantic from England to Newfoundland. This story, from 1903 through 1939, features a woman who seeks to find her true self in a society that demands respectability and conformity from women. It's also a fascinating glimpse into the Happy Valley society of colonial Kenya where wealth, indolence, and boredom collide with often disastrous results.

A book about relationships of those living in Kenya in the 1920's. Exciting, characters each with their own unique personalities made this come alive for me. True story based on the lives of those who struggled with the hardship of Africa at such a time. A must read, excellent.
