When Marnie Was There is a Japanese animated movie produced by Ghibili studio, and based on John G. Robinson's novel. The story follows 12 years old Anna who's lonely and depressed and goes through a lot of struggles. She lives with her adopted parents one day she fainted at school from asthma attack. He mother sent her off to her aunt and uncle's house in a small town as a foster child in ordure to get better. Anna spends her time wondering around the village and sketching things. Until she discovers an old mansion across the marsh where she meets a young blond girl named Marnie. That's where the film started to represent a beautiful mystery and friendship. The best thing about the movie is the animation it has lovely gorgeous and beautifully well made animation style. The film had one of the deepest character growth and it has characters that you can relate with as well. I love the atmosphere of this anime it's very realistic and solid. The ending is very sad but it does make sense a lot it's very meaningful. While the main character gets a lot of development by the end of the movie and she does overcome her struggles. I really loved and enjoyed this anime movie it's one of the best anime movies I have seen since a long time. I really recommend this anime even for non anime fans. You should definitely check it out.

A bit dark for a Ghibli movie, but still a fun watch. Based on a 1960s book of the same name, When Marnie Was There is very emotional, but doesn't quite go far enough in explaining why certain things happen.

A ghost story that's heartwarming, and a little sentimental, rather than frightening (though at least one member of my family found it creepy).

A beautifully written celebration of the female bond, the strength of a grandmother's love from beyond the grave, and the resilient spirit of a foster child. Yes you will cry as the story unfolds but it will warm your heart by the end.

This was ok, I found the last part of the film to be a let down. Not as good as Hayao Miyazaki's best films.
