Interesting, but a bit repetitive re the neuroscientist's relationship with a brain damaged patient with an extremely short memory. Book follows the two of them over a 30 year period.

Ms. Oates never fails to build fully fleshed characters within compelling stories. The window into the world of a impaired brain injured man and the individual who is both compelled to understand, use him for her own ambitions, and yet obsessively care for is fascinating. She is nearly emotionaly destroyed by the conflict, but the story does resolve as well in this book's world as it could. Questions of the rights and welfare of research subjects are woven through this story telling.

Books of Oates have specific compositions – like passages from the fragments.
After reading this book, the impression is that during writing author was in an evil mood, she hates its characters.
Sad theme.
I expected more of this book.
