A Year Without Mom
Book - 2015
Follows twelve-year-old Dasha through a year full of turmoil after her mother leaves for America. It is the early 1990s in Moscow, and political change is in the air. But Dasha is more worried about her own challenges as she negotiates family, friendships and school without her mother. Just as she begins to find her own feet, she gets word that she is to join her mother in America -- a place that seems impossibly far from everything and everyone she loves.

Opinion
From Library Staff
A graphic novel for older kids. When her mother goes to the U.S.A. to study, Dasha must handle her school, friends, and plans for the future on her own - she has good friends and supportive grandparents, but things are just not the same without her mother.

Comment
Add a CommentThe story follows 12-year old Dasha who must stay with her grandparents in Russia while her mother goes to the U.S. for a whole year in order to attend graduate school. Set in the early 1990s, Dasha's experiences with friends and first loves seem very real. The pictures are so simple, but show the emotion that teens feel at this stage. Adults, tweens and teens (Ages 10-14) will enjoy this graphic novel for its honesty.
Oh, these illustrations! They are absolutely why I picked up the book in the first place. So adorable. The story itself is interesting- girl coming of age in early 90's Moscow while her mom studies in the U.S.- though I would not say that the writing is superb. But oh, these illustrations!
