All the classic tales are here, as the great detective and his faithful companion, Dr. Watson, tangle with the terrifying hound of the Baskervilles, the beautiful adventuress Irene Adler, and the dastardly villains Colonel Sebastian Moran, Charles Augustus Milverton, and the Napoleon of crime himself, Professor James Moriarty.

Jeremy Brett gives one of the defining performances as Sherlock Holmes in this quality production of the classic Conan Doyle stories.

Jeremy Brett is suffering conjunctive heart failure and manic depression in the last episodes, particularily in "The Mazarin Stone". HE FOUGHT MENTAL ILLNESS ALL HIS LIFE AND HIS MEDICATION CONFLICTED WITH HIS HEART.
He appears for a few minutes at the beginning and end. He died in his sleep in 1995. In the end interviews, much is revealed on disc 12.

As someone who has read and re-read all of Conan-Doyles Sherlock Holmes works for over 40 years Jeremy's rendition for me will always be the pinnacle of translating the books to screen.

I can only hope that one day they will find someone else to achieve the same standards and complete the missing books, sadly I think not!

Though some of the productions inevitably look a bit dated, Jeremy Brett is/was the best Holmes of the last quarter of the 20th century by a long way. David Burke, and then Edward Hardwicke, are both excellent as the long-suffering Dr John Watson also.

Really enjoyed this series. Brett does a great job of the character.
It is interesting to see society of another era.

This is the best Sherlock Holmes around. Jeremy Brett plays the part superbly.

Jeremy Brett's Holmes can never be bettered. So far (2010) it hasn't even been equalled.

"Man, or at least criminal man, has lost all enterprise and originality. As to my own little practice, it seems to be degenerating into an agency for recovering lost lead pencils and giving advice to young ladies from boarding-schools."

Sherlock Holmes, in "The Adventure of the Copper Beeches"
