Diligently written and carefully controlled -- good thing, because the plot is complex (two cases plus a 15 year-old daughter). The cases and the politics (and the choke hold controversy and discussions about evil in the world to a lesser extent) are well developed, forcefully written, concluded, and given the literary postmortem. That's all on the plus side.

Onthe negative: the romantic interest is contrived and shallow; this time, any available female will do to act as a foil for the plot, even though it rings false as a romantic interest. And Bosch's relationship with his daughter as well as his parenting skills are thin, at times implausible, and disgustingly selfish. He bails on his sick daughter so he can go on a date?! He deals with horrific crimes but doesn't check out where his daughter is?? His daughter was recently abducted from a mall but she needs no supervision now? Not credible, unless Connelly wants us to see Bosch as selfish and stupid. I'd love to again read a Bosch novel that is as good as The Black Echo. Bosch was a fascinating character, but Connelly's last three books lack the finesse and attention to human detail that won him that first award, and he's doing Bosch a disservice.

Always satisfying when an enemy who misuses the power entrusted to them gets what's coming to them.

Love that Harry Bosch, who always comes across as a realistic cop/detective/orphan type!
Good solid plotting and scripting, exposing the usual Bosch who isn't always the nicest of guys, but gets the job done!
