The autobiography of player/manager/broadcaster Buck Martinez is a great read - especially for Blue Jay fans who want to stroll down memory lane and relive the glory days from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. As someone who was there from the pre-Bobby Cox era, he sheds a lot of light on how the franchise put together a winning puzzle, which included primarily homegrown talent, smart drafting (including plenty of Rule 5 steals) and impressive free agent signings that eventually put them over the hump. However, his tales of what is was like to be a player in the late 60s and 70s is what makes this book stand out. Unfortunately, many of his solutions on how to make the game better, like having players go down to the Caribbean to experience winter ball probably won't happen in my lifetime. With multi-millionaire prima donnas dominating the ranks these days, the old-school era that Martinez played in is sadly long gone and never coming back.
