TV crime reporter Eve Singer's career is flagging, but that starts to change when she covers a spate of bizarre murders each one committed in public and advertised like an art exhibition. When the killer contacts Eve about her coverage of his crimes, she is suddenly on the inside of the biggest murder investigation of the decade. But as the killer becomes increasingly obsessed with her, Eve realizes there's a thin line between inside information and becoming an accomplice to murder's possibly her own.

I was quite enjoying this book, in spite of the amazing coincidences to move the plot along, however the coincidences got a little too much when (spoiler alert) the theatre manager was disposed of. It was an an unforeseen accident on stage the caused the manager (who hadn't smoked for 15 years) to rush out, bum a cigarette to smoke outside the theatre - into the arms of the killer who was waiting for him. And later a whole bunch of coincidences led to the kidnap of our heroine's father. I lost interest at this point.

Over the years, "Death and the Maiden" by the German romantic poet Matthias Claudius has re-surfaced in many guises, most notably in a famous song and string quartet by Schubert. Here, Bauer makes full use of the idea, to remarkably good effect, rendering what might otherwise have been a run-of-the-mill psychological thriller into a modern day work of art.
Give me your hand, you beautiful and tender form!
I am a friend, and come not to punish.
Be of good cheer! I am not fierce,
Softly shall you sleep in my arms!
A fair bit of suspension of disbelief is required here, but when you sit down to partake of this kind of entertainment, you accept that as part of the ticket price. The killer promises us an EXHIBITION. It's all part of the show.

This book was well written, the story line and characters were interesting. Little humor and love interest helped keep the darkness of the plot from being too unsettling.
