Jack Reacher finds trouble in Texas in the fifth novel in Lee Child's New York Times bestselling series.

Thumbing across the scorched Texas desert, Jack Reacher has nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is Carmen Greer. For Reacher, the lift comes with a hitch. Carmen's got a wild story to tell--all about her husband, her family secrets, and a hometown that's purely gothic. She's also got a plan. Reacher's part of it. And before the sun sets, this ride could cost them both their lives.

Book #13 chronologically, after The Visitor - aka Running Blind (2000) and before Without Fail (2002):

Enjoyed the book and the series. Can't wait to read the next book.

I'm a huge Jack Reacher fan, always waiting to read some serious ass kicking and loving every minute. This book almost lost me, until the last third of the narrative. A slow and boring start was difficult to read, but gratifying in the end. Not one of his best.

This Jack Reacher series mystery was not as engrossing for me during the first half of the book because the author was taking so long to set up the situation. But once that happened, then I was totally involved. I've read most of the series and always have to start reading as soon as I bring it home from the library, even if I'm involved with one or two other books. I enjoy how quickly and easily he dispatches the bad guys. He's my author for getting storybook gratification that the bad guys pay a serious price. I'll keep reading Jack Reacher books until there are absolutely no more. I keep watching for them.

don't know why he would've hung in as long as he did. but it was good at the end

Not the best Reacher novel. It takes about half the book to set up the back story before Reacher can display his talents.

Love the description in driving for hours every time the characters needed to go from one place to the next in echo county. May be the least populated municipal in USA outside of Alaska. The horrific crimes near the Mexican border and Reacher's heroics to intervene in a domestic violence case made it a memorable read.

Child's western takes place in the southern Texas towns of Pecos and Echo. Reacher is hired on at a ranch. He sleeps in a bunkhouse, rides horse, shoots rifles, eats like a cowboy. Reacher has been hired as a bodyguard by an abused Mexican-American rancher's wife whose mean, rich husband has had a dubious past. His past life and that of his politician friend are wound together resulting in targeted deaths and a child being kidnapped. In this story, Reacher comes the closest to being identified as the cause of several dead bodies. This book has several themes....abuse in relationships, hardship of illegal immigrants, past actions can haunt a person's whole life, corruption in the judicial system, bad people deserve what they dish out and need to be dealt with outside of the law. Excellent page turner. Keeps the reader guessing. Can Reacher spot the liar just by following the clues?

He dug a bullet out of the box and held it up. "This thing is tiny. And slow. The pointy part is the bullet, and the rest of it is the powder in the shell case. Not a very big bullet, and not very much powder behind it. So it's not necessarily going to do a lot of damage. Worse than a bee sting, but one shot isn't going to be enough. So you need to get real close, and you need to keep on pulling the trigger until the gun is empty."
