Maja Norberg is eighteen years old and on trial for her involvement in the massacre where her boyfriend and best friend were killed. When the novel opens, Maja has spent nine excruciating months in jail awaiting trial. Now the time has come for her to enter the courtroom. But how did Maja, the good girl next door who was popular and excelled at school, become the most hated teenager in the country? What did Maja do? This book had so much to offer. It is a deviation from the typical Scandinavian crime mystery/thriller. It is told from the perspective of the defendant as the story unfolds in court as well as what she thought and felt while in jail.
It dealt with issues that affect not only the Swedish people, but people throughout the world. It was thought provoking as well as being a well told story. I found the conclusion to be powerful and made the book worth the read.

A gripping, many layered read with themes of class and race, mental illness, teenage relationships, parental responsibility and violence. Highly recommended for anyone who likes crime fiction or culturally relevant stories.

Keeps you guessing until the end. Maja is arrested as a co-perpetrator of a school shooting, but was she a victim instead? The story goes between current time (Maja in jail and on trial) and the past. Suspenseful, interesting and very very sad.

Boring - to much time spent with Maja in jail awaiting trial -
