In the wake of his beloved wife's death, Leon Courtney, the renowned big-game hunter, is raising his young daughter, Saffron, alone in colonial Kenya. As Leon attempts to navigate the murky political waters of this most exquisitely beautiful and wildest of lands, his daughter grows into an independent and headstrong young woman bound for a far different life in Britain, as a student at Oxford. But over the course of more than two decades, spies, traitors, and adventurers will dog their every step. As the fitful years of peace lead to the outbreak of the Second World War, involving Africa once more, Leon and Saffron must fight for their survival.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and had a hard time putting it down. Having been a Wilbur Smith fan for years, I’ve never been disappointed.

Storyline is OK -it's readable to the end. But don't know how it received the title of "the No.1 International Bestseller", not one of Wilbur Smith's best books.

As a fan of Wilbur Smith writing in his ancient Egypt genre I have found this book, and presumably this genre, a great disappointment, so much so that a few pages of this book were enough for me. This isn't my Smith: just goes to show you its not the singer but the song.

Time for old Wilbur to hang it up.
