Bakery owner Hannah Swensen just can't keep her hands out of the batter when murder stirs things up in Lake Eden, Minnesota, leaving the sheriff dead, a deputy accused, and a killer on the loose. . . For Hannah, life seems to be lacking a certain flavor lately. Maybe it's the local sheriff's election that's got her down. For years, Sheriff Grant's been the iron hand in town. But now, Hannah's brother-in-law Bill is giving the old blowhard the fight of his long, dubious career--and Grant's not taking it well, especially once the polls show Bill pulling ahead. But before anyone can taste victory, things go sour. While Hannah's emptying the trash, she makes a very unappetizing discovery: Sheriff Grant's body in the Dumpster behind the high school where she's teaching her cooking class. And as if that weren't bad enough, the poor man still has fudge frosting on his shirt from one of her cupcakes. The number one--and only--suspect is Bill, but Hannah's not swallowing it. Plenty of people had reason to hate Sheriff Grant. Soon, Hannah's dishing up scandalous secrets, steaming hot betrayals, and enough intrigue to keep the gossip mill at The Cookie Jar going through several pots of decaf. And the closer Hannah gets to the truth, the closer she gets to smoking out a murderer with a very nasty recipe for silencing people. . . Includes Ten Original Dessert Recipes For You To Try! "For fans of culinary mysteries."--Library Journal "Fudge Cupcake Murder should not be read on an empty stomach because there are mouth-watering recipes and descriptions of desserts in almost every chapter."--The Midwest Book Review.

It's been awhile since I've read a Hannah Swenson mystery- I had forgotten how much I truly enjoy them. They're light, whimsical, sweet, and charming. They aren't going to win any awards; the writing isn't that great, the characters can be one-dimensional and the identity of the murderer tends to come out of left field. Despite all of this, I am always entertained by Fluke's cozy mystery novels. This one is no different. Hannah Swenson, owner of a cookie shop, solves a murder with the help of her friends and family, with plenty of cookie and dessert recipes thrown in for good measure. All of the important characters make comebacks, including all of Hannah's friends, coworkers, family, and boyfriends. There are two mysteries wrapped in Fudge Cupcake- one is of course, the murder of Sheriff Grant, and the other is the recipe for the namesake of the novel. Some of the characters can grate on nerves, including Delores, Andrea, Mike and even Hannah's cat Moishe. It's still an enjoyable read, and I'll certainly be picking up the next in the series.

This is a simple and quick read if you like murder mysteries. It also has some good recipes to try. I don't see what keeps Hannah going with so much caffeine and sugar in her life! Sounds pretty unhealthy. But Flukes books are no fluke! The entire series is well worth the read and a great dropping off point when the world seems to be closing in too fast! I highly recommend all of Joanne Fluke's books in this series. Thank you to the library for access to the entertainment!

Like this whole series, this book is a "cozy" mystery with lots of yummy recipes to drool over. I don't understand how Hannah survives on so little sleep! An entertaining read.
