Loosely adapted from Ibsen's 'The Wild Duck', this is a skeletons-in-the-family-closet drama that deserves watching for its ambition rather than for what it actually achieves. The film is overlong, with some purposeless scenes that add nothing and should have been cut. But the big flaw is the motivation of the character who 'reveals the truth'. In Ibsen's play that character's motivation is central to the meaning of the drama. Here we don't really know why he goes ahead and tells all. Maybe his own emotional failures make the continued happiness of others too hard to take? Maybe he hates his father enough to pull out the old skeletons? Or maybe he's just a miserable little sh*t? Anyhow, it's a harrowing tale that the audience grasps before the actors on the screen do. But whatever it's drawbacks, 'Daughter' passes the critical test for a decent film: you begin to discuss it as soon as the end credits start to roll. Worth seeing.

Don't read anything about this film before seeing it, but do try to keep track of who is related to whom and who is boss of whom. I did not do a good job of this and was thereby somewhat confused. Many people on this website did not like this film. Whatever reasons they gave, maybe it was because the film speaks of wretchedness that humans can suffer, horrible, horrible wretchedness. To avoid this, thousands of years ago, humans developed some rules of how we associate with one another.

The disappointment of seeing some very famous actors participating in a dreadful film.
The script was a clunky cobbling together of cliché after cliché.
The direction was poor.
The writing was amateurish.
A dud movie, not worth 10 minutes of your time, though, I kept hoping it would improve, but, after 20 minutes, turned it off.

Amazing acting, directing and cinematography. Unfortunately, for me, the story was just too depressing.

I quit watching about 20 minutes in. It wasn't just awful, it was nothing.

Bad : writing, directing, cinematography.
Good : You can stop watching any time you want to ( half way thru for me).

Some Aussi films are sad, confusing, maybe hard to follow, but have a story to tell, like
"The Rabbit Fence" or "Picnic at hanging Rock. This film has nothing to justify the viewer
waiting for 90 min. to see if things get better. Nothing gets better. Lives are ruined, families
are further torn apart than at the start, and NO ONE is spared. I generally like movies with a happy ending, and realize that sometimes there cannot be one, but I loath the movie that
just ends with no resolution to a situation just thrown at you ( like this one).
Save yourself 90 min. for something else better. Skip this one

The son returns home after years away having left after his mother committed suicide. He is just an angry man looking to get back at his father. A character study of wrongs done and the fall out of the son's anger. A good story, but certainly not a happy story.
