Jack Reacher. Hero. Loner. Soldier. Soldier's son. An elite military cop, he was one of the army's brightest stars. But in every cop's life there is one case that changes everything. For Jack Reacher, this is that case.

New Year's Day, 1990. In a North Carolina motel, a two-star general is found dead. His briefcase is missing. Nobody knows what was in it. Within minutes Reacher has his orders: Control the situation. Within hours the general's wife is murdered. Then the dominoes really start to fall.

Somewhere inside the vast worldwide fortress that is the U.S. Army, Reacher is being set up as a fall guy with the worst enemies a man can have. But Reacher won't quit. He's fighting a new kind of war-against an enemy he didn't know he had. And against a conspiracy more chilling, ingenious, and treacherous than anyone could have guessed.

To find a Jack Reacher book I hadn't read yet! It's like Christmas!

This series is really enjoyable and this one really resonated with me for several reasons. The first one, which is kind of silly, is that Jack Reacher and I would have attended West Point at the same time if he were a real person. Because of that, his time in the Army is a time I'm very familiar with. This particular book is set during that time, which is a departure from the previous books. The second reason this one affected me was that his mother died in this book and he realized, as many of us do, that his mother was an amazing woman with hidden depths and that he would miss her for the rest of his life. The last thing about this book was that my library's copy was printed in the UK, so the British spellings of "kerb" and "tyre" were a fun change of pace.

The Enemy is set at New Year’s 1990 with Jack Reacher in the army. The Cold War is over and the first Gulf War is just around the bend although the characters don’t know that. A heart attack leads to murder and a cover up. It’s not clear what’s going on through most of the book and that’s consistent with the best Reacher novels. A subtext is the presence of gays in the US military which Child handles deftly without bowing to the gods of political correctness. Unlike earlier entries and most subsequent ones The Enemy gives us some background on Reacher, his mother, and his brother. Perhaps Child wanted to put a more human face on Reacher. Perhaps he wanted to justify Reacher being fallible. Perhaps it’s just filler. In any case it’s a good entry in the series albeit not one of the top ones.

Read this years ago and am re-reading it. I think the early Reacher books are better than the later ones, although all are excellent. Child is a master at weaving a story around a strong fascinating central character.

In depth look into the military politics after the fall of the Berlin wall while reacher had to stop one serious conspiracy that led to murders and, unfortunately, his demotion in the military rank.

Click the tab to read the plot summaries. Child takes his time in telling us how it came about that a military commander was found dead in a cheap motel with military papers missing. The story explains why Reacher left the MP, provides more info on Reacher's family, both his mom and his brother Joe.

My first Lee Child book to read. I have heard a lot of good things about his books. I've heard that they are all page turners, very exciting. Maybe it's just me but this book did not live up to the reputation. Over all, it was an OK story but for me, it was slow in many places. I don't mind reading books over 500 pages. I've read all of Clive Cussler's books and most of his are over 500 pages. I feel that this book was too long for the story. Maybe if additional editing had been done to remove some of the slow passages, this would have shortened the book and made it more enjoyable for me. I plan on reading The Killing Floor next to give Lee Child a 2nd chance.

I like the female counterparts that Child places to work beside Jack Reacher. They are usually just as intellectually astute at thinking through the 3 W's of a murder and always prove to be an asset to Jack. Summer doesn't disappoint. This novel is set on army bases with a subtheme of gays in the army. Hard to put down, but always a pleasure to pick up.

“This was like July 13th, 1943, the pivotal day of the Battle of the Kursk. We were like Alexander Vasilevsky, the Soviet general. If we attacked now, this minute, we had to keep on and on attacking until the enemy was run off his feet and the war was won. If we bogged down or paused for breath even for a second, we would be overrun again.”
