A few years ago, I found myself exhausted and isolated, my soul and body sick. I was tired of being tired, burned out on busy. And, it seemed almost everyone I talked with was in the same boat: longing for connection, meaning, depth, but settling for busy. I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, writer, and I know all too well that settling feeling. But over the course of the last few years, I've learned a way to live, marked by grace, love, rest, and play. And it's changing everything. Present Over Perfect is an invitation to this journey that changed my life. I'll walk this path with you, a path away from frantic pushing and proving, and toward your essential self, the one you were created to be before you began proving and earning for your worth.

A great read or listen [a female perspective on 12 rules for Life]. The author references the bible a lot, but there is still a good message there and while you many not agree with all the examples the book is a good foundation/reminder about what to consider in life and those you share it with.

First off, this is a very God centered book, if you don’t like that then this book might not work for you. I found that the author has a very different life from mine, but the overall themes were applicable to me. The specifics didn’t help, but overall it inspired me. The author lived a very busy career based life, flying all over the country 40+ times a year giving speeches and leaving her family behind. This book is her journey to overcome that. It isn’t a how to book, there isn’t much concrete advice, just her journey. I think a lot of people can relate the overall themes and bits of information to their own situations, but the details will be unrelatable to many.

I had heard such great things about this book that I was excited when I saw our library carried it. I'm not sure what I was expecting from the book, maybe some suggestions on ways to change your life, but whatever it was, it didn't come through. I felt pretty disappointed throughout the entire book. It was like the author spent the whole time saying that her life used to be hectic and always chasing movement and perfection and busyness but now she isn't. But how? Why? What tips and tricks do you want to share with the rest of us? "Make the decision to slow down." "Get a basketball hoop." "Throw candy." Again, maybe those resonated with others, but for me I walked away expecting and hoping for so much more.

I enjoyed the book and it was like reading my inner voice that is always saying, "Don't forget you're important in your own life." It is definitely spiritually based, so if you are a non-religious person, this might not be the book for you. If you look past all of the "God stuff," it is a motivational and easy read. As a religious person myself, I enjoyed the spiritual component.

Way more God and church in the text than I was lead to imagine. It took a long time to arrive on my hold shelf and I am returning it immediately. No thank you.
