Marianne is stuck in a loveless, unhappy marriage. After forty-one years, she has reached her limit, and one evening in Paris she decides to take action. Following a dramatic moment on the banks of the Seine, Marianne leaves her life behind and sets out for the coast of Brittany, also known as "the end of the world." Here she meets a cast of colorful and unforgettable locals who surprise her with their warm welcome, and the natural ease they all seem to have, taking pleasure in life's small moments. And, as the parts of herself she had long forgotten return to her in this new world, Marianne learns it's never too late to begin the search for what life should have been all along.

Very mixed feelings about this book. There is a very good story running through but it tends to get bogged down by otherworldly people and beings. A good screen writer could make a great movie out of this.

Chose this one because "The Little Paris Bookshop" was ok, and even though I listened to this one through the end I would't recommend it. The main protectionist and her story were fine but there were too many other characters and relationships that didn't knit together and the ending was just lame. Plus it has very little to do with a French Bistro.

I loved this book! An absolutely lovely story! I just hated for it to end! Loved the characters and the setting! Adding Brittany to my "bucket list" ! just a delight-full read!

This story is wonderful. It is a winding tale of how someone who has been completely defeated by her life has found the strength, imagination, and courage to start anew. To meet the woman at the beginning with life emptied out of her completely to the wonderful brave woman at the end is a journey that just must be taken. Through the author's words you can see, sense, and just feel Brittany. Although I have never been there it just feels like I have. A really wonderful story.

A wonderful cast of characters that will touch your heart.

I had a hard time getting started with this book but it was worth it in the end. Slow and gloomy with no hint of a bistro. Be patient. It's a lovely story and well worth trudging through the first 100 pages.

It is not as easy as one would think to take a complete leap of faith and make a major change when one is in middle age. This story reminded me of 'Britt-Marie Was Here', but serious instead of humorous. One needn't be quite so dramatic as having to jump into the river and end it all, but still, we are glad to cheer Marianne on to awakening to herself.

I absolutely loved this book! I enjoyed it so much that I'll definitely be reading other works by this author. I was particularly impressed with the manner in which the author explored a complicated character whom many may believe should have figured out her life long before she was 60 years old. Being in my 60's, I can vouch for the reality of the feelings she went through, as so many women my age were raised with the belief that it was wrong to make choices for our own benefit, rather than deferring to everyone else's needs. I highly recommend it.

This book was OK, but not great. The Little Paris Bookshop was very good, and this one seemed to be trying to tell a similar story (of rediscovery of self), except that the characters were less believable. It just did not ring true to me. I wanted to love it, but it left me cold.

A different twist on a story. I especially liked the "conquering" aspect. I was able to put it down and get right back into the story. The ending seemed to drag out a bit, it could have ended a couple of times before it finally did.
