I would recommend this book only to hard-core Bette Davis fans. The book focuses on the last 10 years or so of Ms. Davis' life, and reveals a strong, committed, and professional actor, and a woman who loved her children very much. The book is very much about Ms. Davis' day-to-day life, and about her relationship with the author, which is interesting. But the writing is mediocre at best, and not very engaging. The author admits to working on this book, off and on, for more than 25 years. Since we had already waited this long, I wish the publishers had taken a few extra months to do a thorough and substantive edit.

Bette was a true original and this memoir is insightful, thoughtful, and revealing - but in a loving and respectful way. It's not sugar-coated, it's a candid but fair reflection of the author's time with one of the most famous women of the 20th century.
