Expecting all the faults of the traditional blockbuster - corny script, acting and characterisation - I was very encouraged by the first ten minutes but after nearly two hours of increasing frustration I gave up. Was some kind of story line developing or were we being shown flashbacks or had I missed the end of the film and we were now into extras - deleted scenes and that sort of thing? Despite occasional glimpses of Branagh in some sort of leading role, doing what I'm not sure, and Mark Rylance performing his usual Understated Man of Principle, there seemed to be little connection between anything or anybody and no direction. Photography was excellent, special effects fairly convincing, acting was OK-ish, all we needed was a script and a plot. War, of course, is chaos and if that's what Nolan is trying to illustrate, he succeeded. The movie is a kind of Shakespeare's Henry V missing dialogue and everything but the Agincourt scenes filmed in random order.
I was born in England 7 years after Dunkirk and the story of that WW2 episode, both myths and facts, resonated through my childhood and schooling. For me, this movie totally fails to do it justice.

Masterful visual storytelling on an epic scale.

Repetitive, farfetched, and with minimal plot and character development, this seems less like a movie than rough footage for a concept that wasn't fully executed.
