Not a war film fan but this was well-made. I found the colors and compositions striking. The acting was solid. The slowness became part of the action. Both tense and a bit meditative.

Very interesting movie well done I enjoyed . Christophere Nolan just seems to make movies different from the norm. his movies always seem interesting. I like his style of directing.

Most people who have reviewed this film were looking for something the film was quite simply not about. I suggest they watch other Christopher Nolan films. If you are looking for factual history read a book.

The only thing I new before watching the movie about Dunkirk was that British and French forces had been backed up to the sea, after watching the movie I knew little else. never did learn how this came to be, nor even the significance. The movie was a waste of time, glad I was able to watch it for free, but very dissappointing.

I normally love war movies, but this movies was so stylized and phony I fast forwarded through much of it. Acting was amateurish, the story line was plodding, and it appeared to be a low budget Euro-pic reminiscent of the old spaghetti westerns. I'm sure Hollywood loved it.

Good cinematography, but the story is a little slow, and puzzling. How can you make a movie about the Nazis' pushing England out of France, and never once, not once, make one reference to it?

Please don't waste your time. This director keeps making these movies that give you a couple moments that provoke a little thought and a few others that induce a little emotion for a few seconds, and otherwise have some decent cinematography with nothing else to offer; and teens and twenty-somethings go nuts 'cause the movies are more rich than Transformers and have more action than an emotional drama or love story. Nolan knows his audience and knows his competition, and keeps getting by with junk 'cause Hollywood's other stuff is somehow worse. He's capable of amazing movies - I've seen a few; but by and large, he's making a helluva career off of trifling nonsense.

Pretty good war movie, a little slow at times, maybe dragged out a bit too long? Absolutely ZERO facts presented at the end or pictures of some of the real people that had been in that battle. The kind of stuff you would see at the end of a true story movie. Without those it just seemed like a fictional creation.

He didn't kill anyone. He was just looking for a way off the sand, like the rest of us.
===
Where's the bloody air force?
-The navy's requisitioned her.
===
No French soldiers. No French soldiers. No. No, no French. English only. English only past this point. No. It's a British ship. No, you have your own ships.
===
Dunkirk's so far. Why can't they just load at Calais?
-The enemy had something to say about it.
Ah, down here we're sitting ducks.

Colonel, you're gonna have to decide how many more wounded to evacuate. One stretcher takes the space of seven standing men.
===
What about the French?
-Publicly, Churchill's told them, "Bras dessous." Arm in arm, leaving together.
And privately?
-We need our army back.
How many men are they talking about, sir?
-Churchill wants 30,000. Ramsay's hoping we can give him 45.
There are 400,000 men on this beach, sir.
===
He feels safer on deck. You would too if you'd been bombed.
===
What's wrong with your friend?
-He's looking for a quick way out. In case we go down.

===
A bloody frog. A cowardly little queue-jumping frog.

As soon as he pokes his head out, they'll slaughter him.
-Better him than me.
It's not fair.
- Survival's not fair. No, it's shit. It's fear, and it's greed. Fate pushed through the bowels of men.
Shit. He saved our lives.
-And he's about to do it again.
No, don't! Stop!
-Somebody's gotta get off, so the rest of us can live. If you wanna volunteer...
Fxck no. I'm going home. And if this is the price? I'll live with it. But it's wrong.
-Go on!
One man's not going to make enough difference.
-You'd best hope it does, because you'd be volunteering next.
===
You're RAF?
-No. Not me. My brother. He flew Hurricanes. Died third week into the war.
===
Well done. Well done, lads. Well done.
-All we did is survive.
That's enough.

Part 1 of 2 -- Ending voice over of Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on 4 June 1940:
"Wars are not won by evacuations. But there was a victory inside this deliverance, which should be noted. Our thankfulness at the escape of our army must not blind us to the fact that what has happened in France and Belgium is a colossal military disaster. We must expect another blow to be struck almost immediately. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France. We shall fight on the seas and oceans. We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island whatever the cost... "

Part 2 of 2 -- Ending voice over of Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on 4 June 1940:
"We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender. And even if this island or a large part of it were subjugated and staring, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."
