Lawrence Kasdan's "Wyatt Earp" came out shortly after "Tombstone" and suffered in comparison. It's not as if "Tombstone" was a great movie, but it was fun, didn't waste time, and had a truly great performance from Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. "Wyatt Earp," by contrast is long, ponderous, glum, and, did I mention it's long? Kevin Costner, who plays Earp, seemed to have a propensity for long, meandering movies in the 90s, as "Dances with Wolves" and "The Postman" can attest. This movie has a huge cast and a few decent shootouts, but is so, so boring. Costner is a gaping hole of charisma and is in most every scene. Dennis Quaid approaches the role of Holliday with gusto but is overshadowed by Kilmer's iconic performance. Part of the 90s western revivals that Costner's "Dances with Wolves" helped kickstart.

The pacing was a little pokey but over all it was pretty interesting stuff, a pack of lies from the get-go but interesting enough. I guess Wyatt Earp took a back seat to no one when it came to "stretching the blanket". When one gets right down to the Earp myth-boy and how-that the only thing one can be sure of is that there was a guy named Wyatt Earp. Sometimes he was "brave, courageous and bold" and sometimes he was a steely-eyed lawman and the rest of the time he was a gambler, pimp, cold-blooded killer or whatever. For an entertaining and totally mythical take, John Ford's "My Darling Clementine" is miles better than this take of Earp.
