Willie Nelson was known as a highly successful composer of some of Nashville's most deeply personal songs and as one of the Texas-based outlaws of country music when, in 1978, he elected to record an entire album of some of the Tin Pan Alley classics he grew up with.

Likely the album that made Willie Nelson into a performer for people with no knowledge of Nashville? A debatable assertion? Yes, but then some of us are more interested in music than in debates. In this the December of Willie Nelson's life (he turns 80 next year? Ouch!), this album marks his transition from the guy who gave Patsy Cline something to sing into a voice of his own. It's an album of classic American standards, with some other bits tossed in. The pairing of Nelson and one of the kings of the American Songbook, Hoagy Carmichael alone is worth a listen. Oh, and oddly enough the album was produced by Booker T. Jones, late of Booker T. & the MGs.
