"Sophie's husband James is a loving father, a handsome man, a charismatic and successful public figure. And yet he stands accused of a terrible crime. Sophie is convinced he is innocent and desperate to protect her precious family from the lies that threaten to rip them apart. Kate is the lawyer hired to prosecute the case: an experienced professional who knows that the law is all about winning the argument. And yet Kate seeks the truth at all times. She is certain James is guilty and is determined he will pay for his crimes. Who is right about James? Sophie or Kate? And is either of them informed by anything more than instinct and personal experience? Despite her privileged upbringing, Sophie is well aware that her beautiful life is not inviolable. She has known it since she and James were first lovers, at Oxford, and she witnessed how easily pleasure could tip into tragedy. Most people would prefer not to try to understand what passes between a man and a woman when they are alone: alone in bed, alone in an embrace, alone in an elevator... Or alone in the moonlit courtyard of an Oxford college, where a girl once stood before a boy, heart pounding with excitement, then fear. Sophie never understood why her tutorial partner Holly left Oxford so abruptly. What would she think, if she knew the truth?"--

Meh... Something to read. not a very satisfying ending.

This book was like it was ripped out of todays headlines except set in Britian. I found it very thought provoking and at times personally intense on the controversy of sexual tensions when it comes to relationship experiences between men and women as we go through life. This is definietly not a feel good book. Lots of grey areas and lives shattered.

I was expecting some thing truly scandalous but it's tedious and boring. I knew which way the story was going a couple of chapter's into the book. The plot is dull and predictable, I'm surprised I even finished the book.

Not gripping. It's a bit of a slog, and at 3/4 of the way through, I need to send it back, and don't think I could be bothered to finish it. I found all the characters unlikable, and the (annoying) time jumping story line predictable.

The latter part of the book seemed to fall off and wrap up in a contrived manner. We follow Sophie and her thoughts throughout the book and then out of the blue she gets a quick divorce, while typically the husband marries a younger woman. Then, the reader is assured that Kate (the victim of Sophie's husband's rape) will yet have her revenge as another one of the husband's misdeeds is about to be brought to light. This is supposed to satisfy us. Maybe that is the next book, however I was disappointed with this book given the hype behind all the write ups. The book was interesting in parts, but annoying in other areas.

The story seems all too planned out and yet it leaves wide swaths of room in the readers mind to think for oneself. The recipe of the trial is akin to cooking. You may have all the basic ingredients but the final product is the result of more than what is put in to it.

I found the English criminal justice setting interesting and it had some psychological character development that I enjoyed. I also liked how she handled describing rape and the impact it has on victims. However I still think it was too superficial, without depth of story.
