I have never read any of Catherine McKenzie's books until I read The Good Liar and will probably never read another one. This book was hard to follow as it was told in current time and time in the past. It might have been easier to follow if I had the time to read large portions at one sitting. When reading 15-20 pages a night, it was hard to keep up with the writing. It really didn't get interesting to me until I was 100 or so pages into it, and it was never really good in my opinion. This book is not for young readers as it has some bad language.

This was my first Catherine McKenzie book, so I'm not sure what I expected. More of a "thriller" thriller, maybe? Even though this wasn't an edge-of-your-seat read, McKenzie created a good psychological study of the three main characters, each of whom has secrets and something to hide. The novel is character driven, and it's easy to get immersed in the women's drama and confusion. They all have lied. The questions are, who's the biggest liar, what trauma has that person's lies created and what danger might those lies create going forward?

This is for sure not my last McKenzie.

Plot. A perfectly-paced, character-driven thriller.

Basically 'chick lit' but well written and some good character development. Cecily takes little responsibility for the breakdown of her own marriage, i doubt she'll do better with Tom. Someone has spawned a sociopath, obvious early in but part of a good plot twist. The 'book club' questions at the end are patronizing.

I enjoyed this book; it had all kinds of twists and turns so I wasn't able to grasp the ending. The only part that was a bit implausible was the secret that Cecily's children were expected to keep. That being said, it was still a riveting read.

This is one great story. On October 10th, an office building in Chicago explodes, extinguishing the lives of more than five hundred people. The Good Liar is the story of three women whose paths cross and whose lives are changed forever by this tragedy: they are Cecily, Franny and Kate. It quickly becomes obvious that secrets dominate the storyline and all three women will need to tell lies to cope with each of their situations. This is a most fascinating novel and I could not turn the pages fast enough. The plot changes quickly and the suspense builds with each chapter. This is my first novel by Catherine McKenzie and I look forward to reading all of her previous and future books. The Good Liar is a must-read.
