The show follows Eleanor Shellstrop, an ordinary woman who enters the afterlife and, thanks to some kind of error, is sent to the Good Place instead of the Bad Place, which is definitely where she belongs. While hiding in plain sight from Michael, the wise architect of the Good Place who doesn't know he's made a mistake, she's determined to shed her old way of living and discover the awesome, or at least the pretty good, person within.

Imagine blending the whimsy and philosophy of "Pushing Up Daisies" with the character development and dynamics of "Community" or "Parks and Recreation." You end up with "The Good Place", a zany comedy in which Eleanor Shellstrop (Kirstin Bell) wakes up in a peaceful waiting room, to be informed by a divine being called Michael (Ted Danson) that she's been in a fatal accident involving a margarita mixer and a truck. The good news is that she's made it to the Good Place, where you can meet your soulmate, enjoy a custom-made house, and wander around in perfect bliss.
However, Eleanor has a secret. During her lifetime she was rude and selfish, and she knows perfectly well that she doesn't belong in the Good Place. The comedy itself is derived from Eleanor's desperate efforts to deserve her place in paradise, calling upon her soulmate Chidi (an ethics professor) to teach her how to be a good person. However, her very presence in the Good Place is having some nasty side-effects, and her sense of self-preservation is constantly at war with her newfound conscience.
It's a pretty strange-sounding premise, and yet the acting, writing, visuals and genuine interest in the moral and philosophical questions that "The Good Place" raises are what make it so unique and fun. Not to mention, there are plenty of twists along the way that the discerning viewer may pick up on before the finale. For those looking for something very different but unexpectedly deep, this is for you.

Oh the joy. The Good Place is one of those surprises. At first glance I just thought, oh, nifty concept, it won't follow through. But it does, keeping you on your toes as it ducks and weaves through weird and wonderful plot shifts.

Wow, Kristen Bell and Ted Danson! The Good Place could not have avoided becoming a cult classic by the end of the first episode. Acting, directing, and writing are all consistently first-rate.

Very bright and cheerful, everything, the script, the actors, the visuals. 'so much so my eyes and brain starts to hurt. But then, it twists itself around and starts to get somewhat interestings. But not so much so that I want to keep watching. Returned.
