Really enjoyed Season 4. Not your usual predictable crime series. There are complex relationships amongst the characters which add to the drama. The acting was fantastic as well.

Dreary and no humor. Started out as a small town Scottish murder and then became a James Bond caper in Scandinavia - then back again to Scotland! All the females look alike - who ever casts these women has a thing for dark haired girls with very blue eyes. I finally was able to tell them apart in the long, long saga. Not my cup of tea but it is for some.

I tried to think of specific things that were good about this series but I decided that was not necessary because all parts of it are excellent--the story, the acting, the scenery--all of it. BBC, Acorn, and Masterpiece Theater (is that part of BBC?) have so many good series that it is hard to decide which are the best. For a while, I thought George Gently was, then Endeavour. I finally decided the 3 seasons of Broadchurch set the standard. Then along came The Tunnel and The (original) Bridge. All seasons of this have been great. I don't know. Just watch it. The scenery alone is worth it.

Better than previous seasons, the cast of characters and their stories compel this very positive review. Henshall is excellent using his experience and intuition to suss out suspects for 2 murders from many possible figures, including the one sentenced for the first one who served 23 years. His good friend and co-parent for his daughter Cass lands among the candidates as well. This series builds, so worth sticking with the slow progression early.

According to wikipedia, Shetland has some old cultural ties to Norway, plus almost as close as mainland Scotland.
I love the series, especially the brilliant acting.

I agree with another reviewer that the Norway angle was maybe a bridge too far. But otherwise, I think this was the best yet.

No one does drama better than the BBC. This is a must see if you like mystery.. Unlike American mystery and law enforcement programs where you get the killer in the first five minutes and then an hour of the actors walking through the finding the killer.. You will not know who did it until the end.

the first 3 series were enjoyable enough to watch many times. i doubt that i'll watch this one twice. just seems that the writers were trying to cover too much extraneous ground for no coherent purpose. certain of the plot devices seem greatly contrived. still can't grasp why anyone involved in the production thought that norway needed to be in it. the historically complex characters seemed 2 dimensional & often superfluous. sadly, this sort of thing happens to every tv show, eventually. was hoping it wouldn't happen to this one for a few more years.
