Prof. Fox's 14 lectures (2 per each of 7 CDs) thoroughly examines Alexander resulting from his 40 years of discussing him. He was also the main consultant for Oliver Stone's movie on "Alexander" and participated by riding a horse in some of the re-enacted battles! (If you can overlook Collin Farrell as Alexander slipping into Irish brogue now and then, it would be a good intro to these CDs).

The listener gets an overview of the journeys and military exploits of Alexander and life during the 300s series BC.

Prof. Fox gives all 14 lectures which is necessary as he gives personal interpretations and observations of historic documents re Alexander. You may have to adapt to his voice as it gets "croaky" at times and needs a drink of water or a lozenger. But again, it is best to have him. For example, he owns horses and rode one in two of the movie's battles to experience them. And he notes that in the desert the dust coming up from all the horses was wild. In the battle with the elephants charging (30!) he understood why Alexander could not have charged them head on as the horses would have been spooked, so he had to approach from another angle.

And it's not necessary to be steeped in Greek classical courses to enjoy the CDs content. If you have a spattering of Greek Gods mythology, that would be useful as the different deities he and his men venerated are mentioned throughout.

Overall, Prof.Fox's lectures give a good historic perspective of the time and how easy it would be for people to believe he was a god and Zeus his father. Certainly ideas we still have today about important historical figures and their "virgin births". They didn't have DNA testing!
Finally, audio is so convenient as other activities can be done while listening. I found that listenting to them again a second time was excellent to take the lectures in...but you may be quicker!! Cheers & Enjoy
