A gripping thriller about three young girlfriends, a dark obsession and a chilling crime that shakes up a quiet Iowa town, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Weight of Silence. For twelve-year-old Cora Landry and her friends Violet and Jordyn, it was supposed to be an ordinary sleepover—movies and Ouija and talking about boys. But when they decide to sneak out to go to the abandoned rail yard on the outskirts of town, little do they know that their innocent games will have dangerous consequences.Later that night, Cora Landry is discovered on the tracks, bloody and clinging to life, her friends nowhere to be found. Soon their small rural town is thrust into a maelstrom. Who would want to hurt a young girl like Cora—and why? In an investigation that leaves no stone unturned, everyone is a suspect and no one can be trusted—not even those closest to Cora. Before She Was Found is a timely and gripping thriller about friendship and betrayal, about the power of social pressure and the price of needing to fit in. It is about the great lengths a parent will go to protect their child and keep them safe—even if that means burying the truth, no matter the cost.

The author uses a variety of perspectives from different characters and types of writing to tell this story. Be prepared to read scripts from social media, textings, journal entries, and interviews besides the story narrative. The story centers around bullying involving a small group of female school "friends" and even a family member. Social media plays a large part in the action. Some of the activities described in the book and conversations seem more true to mid-teenagers than to the almost 12 and twelve year old female characters. It seems no one wants to help a bullied child, and when help is finally offered, the damage done can't be undone and all are affected. A sad tale, but a good thriller. I liked the simple, sympathetic tone the writer has - a characteristic of her writing I noticed, as I read a few pages of her next story that were included at the end of this novel. That too sounded like an interesting read.

I think that for how the story ended, the book overall could have been shorter. I wanted more than what was presented at the end and was a little pissed getting thrown around for so long only to experience that ending. There were also some characters (I won't say who so as not to spoil anything for future readers) who were inserted in the story but ended up not helping the plot at all. If the characters don't help move the story forward then why were they included in the first place?

Before She Was Found is a twisting mystery. Who is to be trusted would Coras own friends do this to her...or did someone else.

(I love this book so much, it's a very good read for people who like to try and figure things out and be thrown into different directions.)

A New & Noteworthy pick. It was supposed to be an ordinary sleepover, but when the girls snuck out that night they had no idea what would happen. Three young friends, a dark obsession, and a chilling crime that shakes up a quiet Iowa town.

What 12 year olds get up to in small town creepyville. But could be anywhere.

Urban Legends. Secrets. Bullying. A brutal stabbing of a 12 year old girl rocked the small Iowa town. What the police discover in the aftermath was even harder to believe.
