"Heavily pregnant Alice and her partner Pete are done with the city. Alice is haunted by rumors of a skin-sealing epidemic starting to infect the urban population. She hopes their new remote mountain house will offer safety, a place to forget the nightmares and start their family. But the mountains and their people hold a different kind of danger. With their relationship under intolerable pressure, violence erupts and Alice is faced with the unthinkable as she fights to protect her unborn child. Timely and suspenseful, Sealed is a gripping modern fable on motherhood, a terrifying portrait of ordinary people under threat from their own bodies and from the world around them."--

Whoa! This is definitely more horror than sci-fi but what a story! Beware to squeamish people, there were some really intense situations surrounding disease, pregnancy, spiders... and more. However, I loved this story and it totally disturbed me (which is a good thing in my opinion).

I won't nitpick, even though I can...because I just loved this novel. It was atmospheric enough, the characters JUST dumb enough to keep me intrigued (why would they move out to the middle of nowhere in the last couple of weeks of a pregnancy??)...and it was a hit. The ending made my skin crawl in a way no movie or book has since I was a kid. A good, quick read. I'm looking forward to whatever else Booth publishes next.

You know those horror movies where the characters only make the absolute dumbest decisions? That is this book. Very interesting premise of a near future wracked by climate change and a mysterious new illness. Inexplicably, Alice seems to be the only person interested in this new deadly disease, which makes no sense. A few weeks from her due date, they decide to move to an isolated region with no access to medical care, which, again, makes no sense. The characters weren't really likable. Alice is somewhat sympathetic, but Pete comes off as utterly loathsome. I enjoyed the unique story, but ultimately felt that this book could have been better.

I kiss him back and try to shrink my anger, to swallow it down with all the mucus and the bile. But whenever I try to do that, whenever I try to make my anger disappear, it just gets harder and more compact, like sedimentary rock, and then I’m left with this hard compact in my chest. I give up on asking what he saw at the doctors’. My heart becomes a little stone.
