Within certain neighborhoods of Mexico, it's commonplace for children to come home to find their parents have been disappeared and they suddenly must flee with few supplies to fend for themselves as orphans. One special girl finds herself armed with three magical wishes, which attracts the attention of evil spirits. Haunted by ghosts and hunted by the cartel, she collects a group of allies and attempts to make them a home while ridding the streets of both threats.

This is a movie that is not made for everyone. Even though is a “fantasy horror “ movie it denounces the horrible really that Mexicans are living right now: women that disappear by the thousands, human organ trafficking, gangs, violence and corruption.
The movie in my vie is excellent. The story flows in a mix of magic reallity (like Guillermo del Toto Pan’s Labyrinth”) .. the acting is incredibly well performed and the cinematography is fantastic. It is a hard movie to watch because of the violence of people not because of the ghosts.
WATCH IT IN SPANISH with English subtitles as the English version is as bad as it gets.

Near perfection as both real life and film life come together to tell the tale of Mexican drug smuggler's, sex traffficker's and politicians take over villages leaving behind ghost towns, ghosts and orphaned children forced to fend for themselves. Told through the perspective of several children, six boys and a courteous little girl named Estrella, whose mother has become a latest victim. "Tiger's are not afraid," is a term oft told by Shine, the eldest boy, whom has become both caretaker and protector of the others. He tells them bedtime stories about a fearless tiger and a Prince and when real life danger follows he tells them, "Tiger's are not afraid." Until reality and fairytale life clash causing a cataclysmic shift in all these children's lives.

The film is based on a novel of the same name but also inspired by real life incidents where in Mexico it's said some 13,000 children are left abandoned each year due to those parents disappeared. A real life nightmare.

I suggest watching it in original Spanish with English subtitles. The dubbed English makes for easy listening but also looses context, as one viewer already discovered.

A wee bit janky in the execution. The dialogue being translated must've lost some of the improved context and nuance as well as maybe any cultural context in regards to the metaphor or hauntings (?). Original, and for a indie film with obviously a small budget I enjoyed it.
