The favorite memory of my adolescent years were the days I ditched classes to hang out in public libraries, and the first books I was drawn to were stage plays, especially comedies. "Don't Drink the Water" was, I think, the first play I ever read, although it may not be accurate to say I read it. I devoured the lines of this play; I inhaled them. I committed them to memory, and the enduring tragedy of my youth was never having had the opportunity to see--just once!-- the side-splitting stage production of this hilarious play. It featured a great cast: Tony Roberts (A favorite Woody Allen player, particularly in his early films), Anita Gillette, Richard Libertini, and the peerless Lou Jacobi as sarcastic Ugly American tourist Walter trading barbs with the hilarious Kay Medford as his long-suffering wife, Marion.
