Barbra Streisand’s award-winning musical vehicle chronicles the life of performer Fanny Brice, a plain Jewish girl from New York’s Lower East Side who rose to be the toast of Broadway thanks to her fearless determination and an uncanny talent to make people smile. Her personal life, on the other hand, was less than stellar with a string of failed marriages and a particularly heartbreaking love affair with a charming gambler, here played by a very dapper if somewhat tone deaf Omar Sharif. The period touches sparkle, as do Streisand’s interminable gowns, but one soon gets the impression that all that choreographed drama and comedy schtick is mere padding between Babs’ showstoppers. Apparently she was not very funny to work with either.
