I read Wonder this summer and would highly recommend it to all reader levels, but particularly grade 4-8, the years where youth really tend to size one another up, and one’s physical presence often, sadly, outweighs the depth of one’s personality. It reminds me of the 1980 film of Elephant Man about John Merrick, a severely deformed man in late 19th century London. Thus Wonder is a contemporary story of reflecting on our assumptions, biases, and especially first impressions of people. It also is an invitation to think deeper about our relationships with people: who do we choose to hang with, how do they make us feel (really feel)?, and how do we make other people feel with our words and actions. The vocabulary is light and a relatively quick read, but the depth of thinking is potentially deep for YA especially. BAS & SMS Ss I invite you to read it and offer your opinions! Mme M-A.
