This series, beginning with "The Invisible Library," is partly plot-driven adventure, partly fantasy, and partly post-modern puzzle that rewards literary knowledge and tantalizes with references to Piranesi and the Carceri. (Sidebar: I had a carefully shaped lecture on both of these, dovetailed into a journey through Foucault's Discipline and Punish, that I delivered with great success for many years. But I digress.) But most importantly, both of these books reveal Cogman to be a writer of great skill, above average vision, and with a fondness for humour and word play. Both books are definitely worth the time spent, and do have me firmly in line for the next installment.
