Huh. I guess I'm not TOTALLY surprised to see such division in the responses. I imagine a big part of the backlash was due to expectations. With those 2 leads and with the flashy trailers, people likely expected an action movie. It's not. An introspective, occasionally quite dark, occasionally quite philosophical --and often deeply psychological-- drama about isolation, mortality, and how far someone may go if trapped in a desperate situation for too long. Once I accepted the sort of movie I was watching, I was quite impressed at how they handled it. I found it thought-provoking, and I felt deeply for each character's plight (such as the guy who gets a medical checkup and learns he is dying about a hundred different ways at once). I don't think this movie deserves most of the negative criticism. But I do think the people who MARKETED this movie blundered terribly by promising a very different kind of film.
