Lord of Shadows is a sequel that wonderfully progresses the world of the Dark Artifices trilogy. It perfectly matches and improves onto the already complex issues of the Shadow world and its conflicts. The reader discovers the much more dire repercussions of the previous Dark War and how that affects the disputes between Shadowhunters and Downworlders in the present day. Rather than the typical concept of “Good vs. Evil”, this story delves into the many flaws of both sides. Although it was quite obvious which characters were considered the heroes, even villains themselves had qualities that would help the reader thoroughly understand their motives. This is an aspect I personally enjoyed as it added layers onto the world and helped me grasp why both parties felt that they were doing the right thing. Another quality of the novel I enjoyed was the use of multiple points of views. Each POV provides a distinctive story element to the narrative, as well as enhance the already compelling and complex characters. As vital the plot of a story can be, having well-thought out characters are essential for an engaging read. That being said, Lord of Shadows was a perfect addition to the Shadowhunter World and being a sequel, I would recommend this to those who are already fans of the trilogy. 4.5/5 stars @nevertrustaduck of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library The Lord of Shadows is the second book of The Dark Artifices. In my opinion I found that this book was a lot better than Lady Midnight. We got to see new surprises and unexpected twists and turns that will leave readers holding their breathe. You will be hooked by the first chapter. We also got to see deeper into the Shadowhunter world than ever before. We were able to see new perspectives of different characters including Kit, Dru, Ty, Livvy, and Diana. It was a complete pleasure to get to know these characters more and to understand them better. There were new challenges in this book, and the solutions were unexpected! I was blown away, heart broken, and satisfied by this. I felt so many different emotions in one book! Every time the author changes the perspective of a character, she leaves us in a cliff hanger which makes us want to keep reading. Some people find Clare’s way of writing boring, but I find her books addictive. I personally think that Lord of Shadows feels more mature than Lady Midnight. The ending was heart-breaking, it was unbelievable. I enjoyed this book even though I disliked the ending. 5/5 @Nat of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library I have a love-hate relationship with the novel. The story kept your interest throughout the book, as normal with Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter books. I have always loved the unique story lines and plots. However, the action and story plot were slow, and I look forward to reading the next book. However, I personally didn't feel she handled the social issues in the story as well in the past books. In this novel, it was obvious she wasn't just telling a story but wanted to make a moral commentary stand. I'm just saddened to see she took a commercial outward stance when in previous books she took moral stances and subjects and handle them in an original, and classy manner. The story line seemed overall secondary. - @katxkatina of The Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board
