Sandwiched between 400 pages is the discovery of 2 bodies at the beginning of the novel, then a lot of investigations are described all ending in few results, but, finally, close to the end, a breakthrough occurs so that the murders can be solved. Sound familiar? I admit that I got tired of following Vera and her detective team around the countryside pursuing possible leads, checking stories, finding out details about events in the past, discovering facts about the lives of their suspects, and linking new clues to possible motives. It took Cleeves too long to reveal the necessary clues that helped Vera solve this murder mystery.
