A children's book about grief, mental illness, and the after effects of war doesn't sound very appealing, but this book is so beautiful, poignant and brilliant that it is well worth reading. After a family tragedy, young Henrietta, known as Henry, her mother, father and baby sister move to a new home in the country to rebuild their lives. But the family falls apart, torn by grief and mental illness. Henry, confused and hurt, tries to do what she can to patch her broken family back together. So many books and movies show people grieving for 2 minutes and then moving on, but this book explores how deep, profound and consuming grief really is. Henry is a fantastic heroine, so brave and persistent. The story is suspenseful, with many mysteries and twists and turns. This book may be challenging for many children, but those who persist will find this a beautiful and moving story. Highly recommended, for mature children and adults too.
